The Thai sources I have do not state that the vowel inserted in non-conforming clusters is actually a svarabhakti vowel, i.e. In other words, all four types of initial cluster are called อักษรควบ by someone. In Northern Thai, it aspirates a preceding unaspirated stop, and is pronounced with an intervening vowel if the preceding consonant is an aspirated stop. ' ระวง' is the subscript form of that rises up and half circles the preceding consonant. However, the concept of อักษรควบไม่แท่ can include ห nam and อ nam, as I remember from discussions with a Thai ('Alone' at the 'Learning Thai' forum), and I submit this gem from a Lanna Thai text book: The four-way division given in Consonant Clusters is in the native tradition, but the divisions may be different. Well, I am not sure that there is a single native classification. R2D2 recently asked for my understanding of the native Thai classification of initial clusters.
